While the study of personality psychology seeks to determine the various ways that people differ from one another, and figure out individuals from the inside out, personality within social psychology seeks to figure out individuals from the inside out in varying contexts. Virtually every school district in the country has been or is currently facing the need to reduce their budget. In the last two years, budget cuts have become far more common in school districts than ever recorded. Some schools are able to cushion the effects of the reductions by shifting fundings around or pulling out reserves, but there is no debate to the fact that these cuts have, in one way or another, a negative impact on the education of students in school districts. Some strategies to reduce fundings in schools are easier to approach rather than others. In many school districts, the emphasis is put unto reducing individual budget line items. An example of one of these convenient strategies is cutting off â€Å"low-hanging fruit†. Some fruit trees may have branches with fruits lower to the ground easier for humans and animals to pick off with little effort; this fruit aptly being named â€Å"low-hanging fruit.† In budgeting, the term is used to identify items in a budget that might be easily accumulated without significantly disturbing the operation of the school or district. Two common examples include reducing office supplies or increasing the cost of school lunches. The problem with low-hanging fruit is that most of these reductions have barely any impact on the overall budget, with little to no change in the budget whatsoever. Shards of Silver Fade by Midnight Odyssey free essay sample

While Ive only really talked about this genius here once, my review for Funerals From the Astral Space managed a magazine placement which I thought was utterly awesome. Its been four years and now Dis Pater has released yet another bonified masterpiece. Midnight Odyssey is a one man Australian enterprise with Dis Pater at the main helm of it all. This band includes all things spacey and atmospheric in the world of Black Metal. This album could very well beat out its predecessor with a slight change in style, longer tracks and adding a new layer yo this space themed world that he creates. This album is almost 150 minutes in length making it much longer than Funerals which was only two hours in comparison. This album isnt quite as heavy, or as brutal as the last because one Dis prefers to have more melodic sections and more clean vocals as well. Not one track in this album is shorter than 14 minutes which means youre in for some epic, epic music here and the number of tracks are also cut in half with four on each disk. Expect to come in with in open mind and maybe hear some nebula nearby or perhaps a supernova only blasting miles from you. Thats what space feels like, that is what Midnight Odyssey sounds like. I almost guarantee you will like this album. The album may be quite lengthy but you will enjoy every second of it. I give this a 10/10 it surpassed all expecta tions when coming in and blasted them with gamma rays. I am the Grim Reaper, signing off.

For manufacturing, it did not begin to become propionate until the late 1960’s when the farmers decided they no longer wanted to be regulated by the government. After this action was taken, they slowly started to introduce themselves as predominate producers in ships, memory chips, automotives, and technology. On average, a blue jay is a medium-size bird measuring 9 to 12 inches in length and weighing between 2.5 and 3.5 ounces. Habitat and Distribution Blue jays live from southern Canada south into Florida and northern Texas. They are found from the East Coast west to the Rocky Mountains. In the western portion of their range, blue jays sometimes hybridize with Stellers jay. Blue jays prefer a forested habitat, but they are highly adaptable. In deforested regions, they continue to thrive in residential areas. Diet Blue jays are omnivorous birds. While they will eat small invertebrates, pet food, meat, and sometimes other bird nestlings and eggs, they usually use their strong bills to crack acorns and other nuts. They also eat seeds, berries, and grains. About 75% of a jays diet consists of vegetable matter. Sometimes blue jays cache their food. Behavior Like crows and other corvids, blue jays are highly intelligent. Captive blue jays can use tools to get food and work latch mechanisms to open their cages. Jays raise and lower their crest feathers as a form of nonverbal communication. They vocalize using a wide range of calls and can mimic the calls of hawks and other birds. Blue jays may mimic hawks to warn of the predators presence or to trick other species, driving them away from food or the nest. Some blue jays migrate, but how they decide when or whether to move south for the winter is not yet understood. Reproduction and Offspring Blue jays are monogamous birds that build nests and rear young together. The birds typically mate between mid-April and July and produce one clutch of eggs per year. Jays build a cup-shaped nest of twigs, feathers, plant matter, and sometimes mud. Near human habitation, they may incorporate cloth, string, and paper. The female lays between 3 and 6 gray- or brown-speckled eggs. The eggs may be buff, pale green, or blue. Both parents may incubate the eggs, but mainly the female broods the eggs while the male brings her food. The eggs hatch after about 16 to 18 days. Both parents feed the young until they fledge, which occurs between 17 and 21 days after hatching. Captive blue jays may live over 26 years. In the wild, they usually live around 7 years. In an early scene Eddie evidently says I mean he looked so sweet there, like an angel- you could kiss him he was so sweet! this relates and concludes to Eddies kiss scene with Rodolfo. This brings out Eddies feminine side and shown his hidden true feelings to Rodolfo. I do not think Eddies actions were a way to insult him but were mixed reasons for his reactions. Personally his actions were to prove his point that Rodolfo was gay. But instead of showing this he includes himself in proving that he too is gay. This changes the view of character of Eddie. As it can somehow define the way Eddie does not want Catherine to be with Rodolfo. Meaning that he a has finally shown his true emotions towards Catherines future husband. As the tension builds up Eddie knows he has damaged the relationship with his niece, evidence that Eddie was very troubled as Alfieri describes his eyes were like tunnels using a simile on the angered look on his face. He tells Alfieri that the guy aint right. I think the reason why he goes against his society and informs because he is a victim of his emotions. As all the emotions mixing, he experiences being pressured into going against his family. This also links onto the first Greek tragedy on the Italian boy who turned against his parents for betraying them. Egypt The majority of people have various ways of viewing cultures. Because of close-mindedness and lack of cultural education, people have a difficult time interacting with different societies. I feel that people shouldn't stereotype because this might lead to misjudgment. For example, I have personally experienced this type of stereotyping of my Egyptian culture. Although people view Egypt as a plain desert with camel riders, my experience from living there shows Egypt to be a developing civilized country with a great history . People think about Egypt in this manner because of the media. The news primarily exposes the uncivilized parts of the country. For instance, the well known news broad-casting channel CNN showed the circumcising of a young girl on the television screen. This is a harsh way to introduce a culture to people. Often, CNN shows cases of the Egyptian desert with camel riders. This narrow perspective influences the society's view of our culture. Another example is an article in the National Geographic magazine about Egypt (written by Peter Throux in April 1993). The writer described the country as smoggy, dirty, over-populated and with traffic problems. The article introduced Egypt as a superstitious culture which was graphically proven in a picture shown in the article. This picture showed the head of a woman with the body of a snake. This picture gives the reader the impression that Egyptians believe in black magic. Whenever the media introduce a culture, they should mention all the positive and the negative aspects of that specific culture. For instance, whenever you watch a program about the United States of America back home, you see only sky-scrapers and big luxurious cities. This doesn't portray the entire United States. In reality, Egypt is a mixture of well educated and uneducated people. I have lived there for many years and from experience, I think it's an interesting country. Egypt has the Nile River which supports the cities around it with water and green areas. In Egypt, the government encourages the people to move away from the cities and start agricultural communities with great facilities. This encouragement helps provide more agricultural areas and more jobs for the Egyptian people. This enrichment has stabilized the currency for six years and has also improved the growth of the national income. In Egypt, there are the "pyramids" which are symbols of the Egyptian pride. Temples, churches and mosques show a great art of design. These buildings are not just constructions, they are decorations and a history for all generations. This history has motivated the Egyptians to continue their modern progresses. It has also influenced the Egyptian traditions.

Ceaseless controversy †Christianity Essay

The 18th century England was embroiled in ceaseless controversy. The first half of the century was marked by political movements, the rise of skeptics and deists (enlightenment period) whereas in the second half, revival within the church became the issue at stake. Harris states that the century witnessed deterioration in religious tradition, which resulted from a new spirit of individualism, accompanied by the development of new literary forms.1 Ancient records served as the basis for the claims of Christian theology,2 and the deists questioned their authenticity. The deists also ignored revealed religion, laying emphasis on the religion of nature, which is based on reason. As Cragg infers, gradually reason took the place of theology, and served as a principal factor preoccupying the century’s thought. Moreover, its supremacy as a foundation of faith was universally accepted.3 As a result, the deists expressed their objections to Christianity, considering it as a religion contrary to reason. The enlightenment period of the 18th century also came up with biblical criticism. New methods of empirical science were applied to the study of all disciplines, including the Bible.4 Consequently, a number of distinguished writers subjected the Bible to criticism. One of these personalities was Thomas Paine. In his second part of The Age of Reason, he attacked the Bible based on his own investigation. In 1796 Richard Watson, bishop of Liandaff (1737-1816),5 wrote a refutation against Paine’s book, entitled: â€Å"An Apology for the Bible.† Thus, Paine’s The Age of Reason (II) and Watson’s refutation represent enlightenment insights and religious authority respectively, which stood at conflict in the 18th century. By comparing their different perspectives, this paper will demonstrate that Paine’s argument is based on reason whereas Watson’s is based on Biblical authority and tradition. Paine is a believer in natural religion, and so his writings are opposed to the assumptions of revealed religion. For him, God fully reveals himself not in written scripture but through the universe, which can be communicated to anyone without being falsified as the Bible is. Therefore, in his attack against the revealed religion, he primarily searched for defects in the Bible. Raising a moral issue, he quoted a verse from the Bible wherein God ordered the Israelites to attack the Canaanites. From this he concluded that the Bible cannot be the word of God, as it includes a morally defective account which the creator of man by no means commissions to be done.6 According to Paine, it is repugnant to God’s moral justice that he should doom to destruction the crying or smiling infants of the Canaanites. In his reply, Watson demonstrated his defense of the revealed religion. He contends that if we are to despise the revealed religion in this way, the same will be true for natural religion, because it is obvious that earthquakes too swallow up men, women, the little ones, and infants. Then, â€Å"why do you not maintain it to be repugnant to God’s moral justice,† Watson asks Paine, † that he should suffer crying or smiling infants to be swallowed up by an earthquake, drowned by an inundation, consumed by fire, starved by famine or destroyed by pestilence?†7 This indicates that according to Watson, there is also a defect in the deist’s bible, i.e. nature. If the Bible is to be regarded defective in moral accounts because of the destruction of the infants of the Canaanites, Paine’s bible (nature) too is equally defective. In another words, Watson infers that what is revealed in nature is found in the Bible, so they are not contradictory to each other. Therefore Watson argues that it is unfair for Paine to criticize the Bible without equally comparing it with his bible (nature). He strongly expresses his objections as: â€Å"you have no right, in fairness of reasoning to urge any apparent deviation from moral justice as an argument against revealed religion because you do not urge an equally apparent deviation from it, as an argument against natural religion: you reject the former and admit the latter† (Apology, 91). In this way, Watson views Paine’s argument of morality as biased and unjust. For Watson, the Bible which he regards as â€Å"a divine instruction given to some, and traditionally communicated to all† is infallible, for it is the inspiration of God (Apology, 85). In my opinion, all Watson’s arguments lie on this key assumption. He does not critically question the authenticity of the books in the Bible as Paine does. For example, one of the books in the Pentateuch tells us that Moses spoke face to face to God, and wrote down what God had instructed him. This is undoubtedly acceptable for Watson. He does not accept any philosophical thought that may rob him of his Bible. But Paine, following his motto: â€Å"my own mind is my own church†8 accepts only what seems agreeable to his mind. Watson considers the Bible as an infallible guide, but Paine considers his â€Å"reason† as infallible and self-sufficient. While Paine tries his best to prove that the Bible contains morally offensive accounts, Watson learns morality from the Bible. He addressed Paine: â€Å"the Bible, which you despise, has taught me not to judge anyone; it has said to me, ‘who are you to judge another man’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls† (Apology, 7.) Watson came to know everything acceptable to his mind from the Bible, as his confesses: â€Å"God’s word has assured me of all that I am concerned to know† (Apology, 17.)

Geography Helmand Province is located in the south-west of Afghanistan, bordered by Paktya, Ghor, Daikundy, and Uruzgan in the North-East, Kandahar in the East, Nimroz in the West, and Farah in the North-West. It also has a southern border with Pakistan. The Helmand River is the largest river running through the province, from Baghran district in the north of the province to the fishhook of the Helmand River running west into Nimroz province then into Iran.Except for the mountainous northern reaches of the province which experience heavy snowfalls in winter, Helmand is a desert plateau with rocky outcrops of up to 1,000 metres. The province covers an area of 61,829 km2, representing about 9% of the total Afghan territory. There are 189,552 households in the province and each household on average has 9 members. Around 51% of the population is male and 49% is female. The population is largely Pashtun, although there is a significant minority made up of Balochi tribes.Pashtu is spoken by 92% of the population. The second most frequent language is Dari, spoken by the majority of residents in 75 villages representing 4. 4% of the population, followed by Balochi which is the majority language in 28 villages. Helmand province also has a population of Kuchis or nomads whose numbers vary in different seasons. In winter 95,325 individuals, or 4% of the overall Kuchi population, stay in Helmand living in 49 communities. Nearly one in five of these (17%) are short-range partially migratory, and more than three in five (63%) are long-range partially migratory.Overall, for both categories, 20% of the community is settled. In the winter the long-range migratory Kuchi stay mostly in one location and don’t move around during the season. In the summer season, all of the short-range migratory communities that move to Garm Ser, Nishin, and Lashkargah districts belong to the Balochi tribes, while the Pashtun tribes are predominantly long-range migratory and travel mostly to Ghor, Ghazni, and Zabul provinces. CURRENT STATE OF DEVELOPMENT IN THE PROVINCE A. Infrastructure and Natural Resources The provision of basic infrastructure such as water and sanitation, energy, transport and communications is one of the key elements necessary to provide the building blocks for private sector expansion, equitable economic growth, increased employment and accelerated agricu ltural productivity. Economic Governance and Private Sector Development Creating the conditions in which a dynamic and competitive private sector can flourish, is key to promoting economic growth, employment creation and poverty reduction. Helmand is mainly an agricultural province. There are two industrial crops grown in the province, Cotton is produced in 57% of villages, mainly in Nad Ali, Nawa-i-Barikzayi, and Garm Ser districts. Tobacco is produced in 24% of villages, mostly in Garm Ser, Kajaki, Baghran, Nad Ali, and Nahr-i-Saraj.To a smaller extent, sesame is produced in 10% of villages, mainly in Kajaki, Garm Ser, and Nad Ali; and sugar extracts in 6% of villages, again in Kajaki and Nad Ali mostly. The majority of commercial activity in Helmand is related to agriculture, animal husbandry, transport companies for import and export as well as the production and trafficking of narcotics. Agriculture is a major source of revenue for 69% of households in Helmand province, including 70% of rural households. Sixty seven percent of rural households own or manage agricultural land or garden plots in the province. However, more than one quarter of households (26%) in rural areas derive income from trade and services. This was an increase of around 15% in membership over 2003 when the figure was only 4,616 members. In 2005, agricultural cooperatives controlled a total of 20,063 Ha of land and achieved a surplus of produce for sale of 10,000 tons. As a result of this, each member held a share in the capital of the cooperative to the value of 825,900Afs.To all extents and purposes small industry is absent in Helmand and there is only a small production of handicrafts mostly related to jewelry, mainly in Nad Ali, Nawzad, and Garm Ser districts, and rugs in Nad Ali, Baghran, and Nawzad. Honey is also produced in 16 villages of 693, and karakul skin in seven. In 2005 23% of households in Helmand reported taking out loans. Of these loans, a small percentage was used to invest in economic activity such as buying land (1%), agricultural inputs (10%) and business investment (1%). C. Agriculture and Rural Development Enhancing licit agricultural productivity, creating incentives for non-farm investment, developing rural infrastructure, and supporting access to skills development and financial services will allow individuals, households and communities to participate licitly and productively in the economy.As agriculture represents the major source of income for more than two-thirds of the households in the province, rural development will be a key element of progress in Helmand. The most important field crops grown in Helmand province include wheat maize, and melon/water melons. The most common crops grown in garden plots include fruit and nut trees (67%) and grapes (26%). Wheat is also frequently gown in garden plots in the province (4%). Education Ensuring good quality education and equitable acces s to education and skills are some of the important ways to raise human capital, reduce poverty and facilitate economic growth. The overall literacy rate in Helmand province is 5%, however, while 8% of men are literate, this is true for only 1% of women. In the population aged between 15 and 24 the situation for men is not much better with 9. 1% literacy, whereas for the women there is no improvement 0. 9%).The Kuchi population in the province has particularly low levels of literacy with just 0. % of men and no women able to read and write. On average only 6% of children between 6 and 13 are enrolled in school, however the figure is higher for boys at 11%. Furthermore, amongst the Kuchi population in Helmand, no boys or girls attend school during the summer or winter months. Overall, there are 225 primary and secondary schools in the province catering for 80,121 students. Boys account for almost 94% of students and about 99% of schools are boys’ schools. There are 1,452 teach ers working in schools in the Helmand province, about one of ten of whom are women (12%). Fourty three percent of students must travel more than 10 kilometres to reach their closest primary school, while 29% must travel up to five kilometres. Secondary schools exist in only 45 villages, which are home to 2. 9% of the population. To reach their closest secondary schools 57% of students have to travel more than 10 kilometres, and more than one in five have to travel at least five kilometres. Access to high schools is even more difficult.They exist in only 17 villages in the province, and almost seven out of ten students must travel more than 10 kilometres to reach their high school, while another 12% must travel at least five kilometres. Helmand province also has a number of higher education facilities, although there is currently no governmental or private university in the province. There is an Agriculture Vocational High School with 2 teachers catering for a total of 146 students, all of whom are men and a Mechanics High School with 8 staff and 117 male students. In 2005, 14 students graduated from the Agriculture School and 8 from the Mechanics School. There is also a teacher training institute which had 134 students in 2005, 75% of whom were men and 25% women.Seventy two new teachers graduated from Helmand Teacher Training Institute in 2005, of which 67% were women and 33% men. E. Health Ensuring the availability of basic health and hospital services, and developing human resources in the health sector is essential to reduce the incidence of disea se, increase life expectancy and enable the whole population to participate in sustainable development. A basic infrastructure of health services exists in Helmand province. In 2005 there were 31 health centers and 2 hospitals with a total of 172 beds. The majority of communities do not have a health worker permanently present in their community.Eighty five percent of men’s shura and 73% of women’s shura reported that there was no community health worker present, and both groups most commonly said that their closest health facility was a Basic Health Center clinic without beds. Out of the total 1,705 villages, only 39 have a health center within their boundaries, and only 64 have a dispensary. Access to health care is very difficult for many people in the province with more than half of the population having to travel over 10 Km to get medical attention – 62. 4% for health centers and 56% for dispensaries. F. Social Protection Building the capacities, opportunities and security of extremely poor and vulnerable Afghans through a process of economic empowerment is essential in order to reduce poverty and increase self-relianc e.The level of economic hardship in Helmand is reasonably high. In addition, of the 23% of households who reported taking out loans, 58% said that the main use of their largest loan was to buy food. G. Governance, Law and Human Rights Establishing and strengthening government institutions at the central and sub-national levels is essential to achieve measurable improvements in the delivery of services and the protection of rights of all Afghans No relevant data analysed at provincial level available from national sou rces has been identified in this area. H. SecurityEnsuring a legitimate monopoly on force and law enforcement that provides a secure environment for the fulfillment of the rights of all Afghans is essential to ensure freedom of movement for people, commodities and ideas, and to promote social and economic development. A recent assessment made by the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) reported that the prevailing security situation in Hilmand province remains extremely unstable, and is assessed by some security actors as being the most volatile province in Afghanistan. The prevailing security situation can best be considered by three distinct geographic areas; north, center and south. The north of the province, encompassing the Districts of Nawzad, Musa Qala, Sangin Qala, Baghran, Washeer and Kajaki is by far the most unstable area in the province, and perhaps the most volatile in the country.Throughout 2006 and 2007 insurgents and the International Security Ass istance Force (ISAF) experienced significant, unprecedented clashes, each suffering large numbers of casualties. It is assessed that both ISAF and the Government have no control in these areas. The center consists of the provincial capital, Lashkargah and four other districts. These are also assessed to be extremely volatile, although they are calmer than the northern and southern regions of the province. ISAF and the Government are also assessed to have little control of the area outside of Lashkargah, in particular because of constant attacks against Government targets in these areas.The south of the province encompasses the districts of Garm Ser, Dishu and Reg-i-khan Nishin, and the southern international border with Pakistan. ISAF assesses that the southern ‘frontline’ is an east-west line running parallel to the Hilmand river as it fishhooks to the west in Garm Ser District, South of that line Government and ISAF have effectively no control of the area. At times pa trols will enter the area for specific targeting and counter narcotics operations however there is no enduring presence. Garm Ser District Centre fell into the hands of insurgents on several occasions during 2006; ISAF forces remain in the District Centre and conduct operations through out the district. Page 11 of 13 Provincial Development Plan, Helmand : Provincial ProfileThe UNDSS assessment highlights the following key factors of insecurity in the province: Factors of Insecurity Illegally Armed Groups (IAG) continue to operate in the province in a quasi-legitimate way, due to a lack of Government presence. Many groups are being referred to as â€Å"Reserve Police† or â€Å"Special Police† and are being deployed to the northern districts of Helmand and other problematic areas of the province for military operations. The Disarmament of Illegally Armed Groups (DIAG) programme is not currently operating in the province. The security situation within the province remains volatile with capable insurgent groups active, or at least present, in most districts.Criminality is no more significant in Helmand than in the surrounding southern provinces. Aside from drug-related crime, the Ring Road has been targeted by bandits as well as by insurgents. Property crime is also prevalent. Helmand is the largest opium producing province in Afghanistan.. Eradication efforts to date have not been successful. Although tens of millions of dollars have been spent and Ministry of Interior policemen have been killed carrying out eradication activities, in 2005-2006 the opium crop increased by 162%. Poppy cultivation is concentrated around the Helmand River with the bulk of production taking place in the Sangin Valley and surrounding areas.The quality and potency of the opium from these areas is renowned in the region. Involvement of Government officials in the drug trade is widespread in the province and beyond. Moreover, there are also clear linkages between the narcot ics trade and the insurgency, with the groups cooperating with each other for mutual benefit. The Afghan Eradication Forces (‘AEF’) sponsored by the Ministry of the Interior has been deployed to the province in order to undertake eradication and have met with fierce resistance. Freedom Through Christianity Essays - African Slave Trade Freedom through Christianity What do people look for in religion? Do they look for guidance, beliefs, reason, or do they look for help? African-Americans have looked for all of these for many years. They found all of these in Christianity. Christians believe in one God who they worship, trust, and look up to. Since Christianity was first intorduced in the early Colonial Period, African-Americans have used their Christian beliefs to fight horrible things that have gone on in America such as slavery and segregation. As African-Americans were captured through the slave trade and brought to the colonies they possessed many different religious beliefs. Many people are extremely ignorant in history and believe that all African-Americans were once united together as a whole in Africa. This was not nearly the case. Africa was made up of many different states with many different people and with many different beliefs. These people were dark skinned, but aren't all white people light skinned. The white man has never agreed on one main language. As the African-Americans were brought to the colonies from Africa, they used Christianity to help bring them together. Some people use song and dance to express their Christian beliefs. This was all started by the slaves. African-American slaves used songs, dances, and often stories to show their feelings about God. These stories were called trickster stories. As African-American slaves became more involved in the Christian faith it gave them something to live and fight for. Instead of doing labor for their white owners, they did their work for themselves and most importantly, they did it for God. Slaves were treated as animals. They were forced to work in the fields, in the house, or on the farms for free. They were beaten, deprived of food and clothing, and even raped. If slaves tried to run away they were captured and beaten. Being beaten meant being stripped of their clothes and whipped severely with a leather strap. Some were whipped up to 300 times. As time passed, African-Americans were beginning to speak English. This helped significantly. Now they could preach and spread their beliefs. As Christianity spread through the country, slaves were beginning to worship the Lord out loud. They began to build churches and have marriages. Having Christian marriages provided a family for the slaves and this gave them a sense of brotherhood. The white man degraded the slaves so much that many had an extremely how self-esteem. Many slaves felt that their duty in life was to be the white man's slave. However, Christianity showed them that they were equal to everyone and this often raised the slaves self-esteem. Through churches and marriages the African-Americans were now creating a community for themselves. Slavery ended and blacks were finally free to some extent. Although they were now free, they would still remain under the white man's foot. This was a huge step for the African-Americans though. I believe that Christianity had a lot to do with the ending of slavery. The blacks already knew that slavery was wrong, and finally enough whites realized, through God that this was wrong and immoral. However, there will still be many whites who are ignorant in the preachings of God and still treat the blacks as though they are slaves. African-Americans will keep their heads high and fight for their freedom through the strength of God. Even though African-Americans were no longer slaves, they still do not have the freedom that everyone in America deserved. Slavery was now gone, but the main issue became segregation. Blacks still did not received the same rights as the whites did. They could not attend the same schools, use white bathroom facilities, eat in the same restaurants, ride on the front of buses, or even drink fro the same water fountains. This went against everything that God said and the blacks knew that. They knew that God created everyone equal and their are some African-Americans who will fight for this. Most blacks were scared to come public and fight for their rights. There was still a lof of violence and hostility toward blacks at this time. Blacks were being hung, beaten, and brutally murdered. June 6th SAT Scores Have Been Released - How Did You Measure Up SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Scores from the June 6th SAT have been released, and they have served to increase the controversy around the test. Put simply, the scores may be much less accurate than usual tests because the College Board was forced to throw out two of the sections. Read on to see how students have reacted, how the scores vary from other administrations of the exam, and what your options now are. The Confusion and the College Board’s response There was quite a lot of confusion around how, exactly, the tests were going to be scored. Students were told many different and contradictory things when they phoned up the College Board – including that only section 8 or section 9 would be dropped, that they would both be dropped, that the experimental section would be counted instead, and that the two sections would only be dropped if the individual student had been affected – implying to some that if their proctor had stuck to the normal timings, that their scores would not be affected. The College Board’s official statements, as well, furthered the confusion, at first implying that only one section would be eliminated, but they then updated it to state that two would be removed. On June 25th, when the scores were released, the College Board issued the following statement: Today, we are reporting scores for all students who took the SAT in the U.S. on June 6. As we previously communicated with students, due to a printing error in the standard test books provided by Educational Testing Service, the College Board and ETS did not score the two affected sections and are able to provide students with valid and reliable scores. To make this determination, we conducted a comprehensive review and statistical analysis with three important components: First, the scores for the shorter test were shown to be sufficiently reliable - meaning they show technical consistency over repeated testings. Second, the equating process was not affected by the error. Equating is a statistical procedure that is conducted to ensure that different versions of a test are of comparable difficulty. Finally, the scored sections had the same distribution of content and skills as the full-length test and therefore is reflective of the overall SAT content specifications. We have consistently communicated with College Board higher education members since learning of the misprint in the June 6 SAT administration book. Admission directors from across the country have told us they have full confidence in those scores and will view them just like scores from any other SAT administration. They want students to be assured of the integrity of their scores. We take our responsibility to students very seriously, and we appreciate their patience as we’ve worked to deliver to institutions scores that are valid and reliable. See the full text here. What have we learned The scoring system has been confirmed It’s official: two sections (Section 8 and Section 9) were dropped from the test, and the experimental section was not subbed in for one of them. On your score reports, you will see that your raw scores are much lower than they normally would be because of this. Universities WILL accept the June 6th results It was very good of the College Board to call around and make sure that universities across the country will not be punishing students for their mistake. It would have been even better of them to let us know this earlier, since it seems that they have had the information for a while, and it could have saved a lot of students from a lot of stress. The SAT is too long on purpose According to the same QA, the SAT that can be accurately graded from two fewer sections is intentionally built to be too long, just in case the College Board screws up and they have to drop several sections of the test. So, according to them, they have been planning for this kind of eventuality all along, even though it has never happened before. And I’m sure that all of us who have been taking the needlessly long tests are terribly grateful for their due diligence. The equating process was not affected In one of their more believable claims, the College Board has confirmed that the equating process for this exam was not affected. Equating is what the College Board calls their attempts to make sure that each SAT can be accurately compared to other SATs. Though the difficulty of each test is slightly different, they have certain â€Å"anchor† sections that they use to compare one to the other. Fortunately, these sections were not the ones that were thrown out, so the College Board has been able to determine the difficulty of the test for the curve. The College Board is still not showing proof of its claims The College Board made the interesting decision of posting a QA interview with Jack Buckley, Senior Vice President of Research, in which he is specifically asked how they determined the validity of the shortened test and he proceeds to†¦.not answer the question. Instead, Buckley tells that the criteria for determining the validity of the test were: whether scores could be "reliable" without two sections if the tests could be equated if the remaining sections had the same skill content and distribution He does not, however, go on to explain how these tests were actually carried out. One of the main requests from students and parents across the country has been that the College Board show proof that the tests are as â€Å"reliable† as they claim they are. There have been a few suggestions for how to do this, including Releasing Sections 8 and 9 so that students can see how they would have done with those sections added in, compared to how they have done without them. Showing an anonymous test from a previous year, scored at both the full length and with two sections missing. After all, if the test is so bulletproof, and if the College Board is so certain that the two missing sections are not going to significantly affect scores, then why won’t they show us the proof? What problems we still have â€Å"Sufficiently reliable† and â€Å"valid† do not mean the same thing as â€Å"accurate† This is more like an ACT question than an SAT one, so maybe they are hoping that students won’t notice that there is quite a difference in meaning between â€Å"reliable†, â€Å"valid†, and â€Å"accurate†. The College Board has now issued several statements saying that the test has been proven to be sufficiently reliable. However, it now seems that their criteria for this is almost entirely based on the structure of the test, as opposed to the scores. By â€Å"reliable† they mean that the two remaining math and critical reading sections had questions on similar concepts and of similar difficulty levels as the sections that were thrown out. If this were only a knowledge-based test, this might be more significant. Unfortunately, the SAT is notorious for testing simple concepts in ways that are difficult to understand. So, it’s not altogether reassuring that the subject matter on the thrown out sections was not too different. A student could easily, for example, know exactly how to attack one question about absolute value, but be unsure about a second question on the same concept, just because of how it is worded. â€Å"Valid† doesn’t really mean anything at all Similarly, saying the scores are valid simply means that the College Board is happy to stand behind them. Considering that this is the most cost-effective option for them, it’s hardly surprising that they are willing (and glad) to do so. Why aren’t the scores accurate? The College Board has run statistical analyses of the scores on this test and compared it to other tests. They are calling the scores valid because there is a similar distribution of scores. However, statistics always works best on a large scale, and that doesn’t mean that they can say how accurate their scores on a case-by-case basis. For example, if you were to flip a coin 1,000 times, you could be pretty certain that you would get heads about 50% of the time and tails about 50% of the time. But it would be really difficult to predict the outcome of just a single toss. Similarly, though the overall scores fall into an appropriate SAT pattern, it’s impossible for the SAT to guarantee that individual students have not been affected by the dropped sections. Some students will have received lower scores than they otherwise would have, and others will receive higher scores. Students who are mid-range scorers are least likely to be affected by the missing sections. The curves on the SAT are always more generous for mid-range scores, and if you are the type of student who could have expected to miss 15-20% of the questions on each section, then your scores are fairly predictable. High scoring students are most likely to be affected. The curves are always harshest at the top, and on this test it is even more noticeable. If you missed just one question in math or critical reading, for example, your score will be lower than it would have been on almost any other SAT. For more on this, see the scoring charts below. How have students been responding? Understandably, students and parents across the country have been none too pleased with the College Board and their results. Here are a few reactions from College Confidential: I have just received my scores this morning and I am outraged. I have performed the worst I have ever done. I know for a fact this is due to the College Board's mistake because I have scored completely out of my score range for each section. I vividly remember feeling the most confident about the last two sections for critical reading and math, so I knew that those 2 sections would boost my grade, or at least balance out some mistakes I made on the previous two sections. So, of course it makes sense that my scores would suffer due to the removal of these sections and it is so frustrating knowing that I could have been done with the standardized testing process had the College Board properly administered the June SAT. Now I have to take the test in October, which will delay my early action application process. College Board, I am extremely disappointed in your lack of professionalism. My son's scores were significantly lower. This was his 3rd time to take it. The first two times he scored 750 in CR (both times). This time†¦ 680. His Math score was 10 points lower than what he scored in March however he had been working with a math tutor and had improved his math score on his last three practice tests (official CB practice tests) to numbers that should have been 30-40 points higher. This is just so frustrating. Without letting students and parents see what the scores would have been with the 2 omitted sections, there is no way to prove that these scores are "reliable" as the CB keeps touting. I know there are people who are going to say "you can't prove that your son didn't just happen to do significantly worse this time" but frankly to get 750 twice in a row on a section that w as only scored with 2 instead of 3 sets of scores is proof to me that these scores are not accurate. I want ACCURATE scores, not "reliable". My sons went down, after having progressive improvement with previous two tests by 100+ pts ea time.... And he'd taken a month long prep course prior to this test. Math, down 70pts. Critical Reading down 60 pts. Writing down 30. Thanks SAT for wasting our time- was to be his final SAT prior to applying Aug 1st to college. We were disappointed, but knew we would be. On every SAT (practice and actual yes, we got the booklet and answers from college board to confirm it) my kid had trouble with the first 2 sections. It takes her that long to settle in. This test was no different. Her math and reading scores went down over 100 points each and (the unaffected) writing stayed exactly the same as it had on the last 2 tests. We are definitely out of the norm for the stats. This test may be statistically similar for the general population, but certainly not equivalent for our situation. Others are writing to the College Board directly, demanding an earlier retest: October is too late to retest for those interested in early decision deadlines of November 2015. You should provide a new test date much earlier. Please consider the amount of extra time students study for the SAT in addition to regular school classes and extracurricular activities including community service activities. Again you should provide an optional testing day well before October 2015 specifically for those affected by your clerical mistake of June 6, 2015. I am sure your mistakes were not intentional but you did make a mistake. With this in mind the best course of action will be to benefit those affected by taking action above and beyond what you are proposing. Please schedule a new test before October 2015 because this date is not conducive to those who were affected by your mistakes of June 6, 2015 and create additional expenses, stress and anxieties for those who were affected by your mistakes. ...The College Board should set a good example for these students and provide an exam in late July so that the students can have their scores before they spend countless hours preparing college applications, researching schools, etc. October 3 is far too late for many students who intend to have their applications completed prior to that date. Many schools have strict deadlines when it comes to providing merit scholarships, and by not retaking the exam until October 3 thousands and thousands of students will not know truly where they stand in relation to acceptance and scholarships. Not to mention that any of the study skills, etc. that the students used for the June exam will be ancient history by October. This means many more study hours for the students plus the potential for a lot of money to be paid to tutors as there will be a lot of stress for this final opportunity to take the exam for the class of 2016. SHAME ON YOU COLLEGE BOARD!!! DO THE RIGHT THING AND PROVIDE AN EXAM WIT HIN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. This is way too important to ignore or to hide behind the desire for more financial profit.... How do your scores measure up? The best way to see how accurate your scores are is to compare them to the grading systems on previous administrations of the SAT. The College Board has officially released several tests, along with the curves used to grade them. Will this give me my â€Å"real† score? No. As you can see, each test has a different grading scale. This is because of the â€Å"equating† system that the College Board uses, so that more difficult tests can be compared to easier ones. As you can see in the following images, one question wrong on different tests means different grades. There are too many unknown factors to know what your â€Å"real† score would have been with the two sections added in. First of all, you don’t know how you did on those sections. While many people are claiming that they think they didn’t miss any, there’s obviously a very real chance that you did. Also, we don’t know how the difficulty of the June 6th SAT measures up to the difficulty of the tests below. It could have been much more difficult, or much easier. Without knowing that, it’s impossible to tell what the actual grading scale would have looked like. How should I use this information, then? Use the information below to compare your results with what you would have gotten on other tests. This can give you an idea of how you might have done, but it's not exact. For example, here are screen shots of my results. In Reading Comprehension, I missed 4 questions. That would normally come out to a raw score of 62. In looking at the below charts, I can see that a raw score of 62 is usually in the range of 740-760. Instead, I scored a 710. This is quite a bit lower than what I â€Å"should have† scored. I, too, remember Section 8 being quite easy and I was confident in my answers. But everyone makes mistakes, and it’s impossible to say with certainty that I would not have missed more questions. If I had missed another 2 questions, which was my average wrong on the previous two reading sections, my raw score would have been a 60. On the tests below, you can see that would have been equivalent to a score of 720-730. This is still higher than what I got on the June 6th test, but only marginally so. In math, I only missed one question. If I assume that I wouldn’t have missed any others (after all, I did have one error free section), then my raw score would have been 53. As you can see below, 760 is a fair bit harsher than you normally see on math for missing one question, which would have given a score of 790-800 on the below tests. What is the score range? It’s also important to keep in mind that the College Board always recommends thinking of your score as a range instead of a number. This is what your â€Å"score range† is all about. The College Board has always given a score range because they know that one test cannot perfectly measure your abilities. They know there are a lot of factors on test day, like being overly tired, that may affect your score, or that anxiety may make you get stumped on a certain question that normally you would get with no problem at all. Your score range is usually around 30 points below your score, to around 30 points above your score. The idea is that if you were to take the SAT with no additional prep, you should expect your score to be in that range. So, if the differences that you are noticing between your actual score and either your previous scores or the range of scores you can see below is greater than 30 points, there’s more cause for you to be concerned about the accuracy of your scores. On the flip side, if your score was 20 points lower than the last time you took the test, and you didn’t do a significant amount of extra prep, you should know that those scores are probably pretty accurate. Here are the scoring guides – how do you compare? Where do you go from here? Unfortunately, the College Board is still unwilling to give students a summer makeup test. You can, however, register for free for the October test if you are not satisfied with your scores. If you would like to re-take the test, start studying now. You are at a great advantage because you have all summer, without the stress of schoolwork, to master the tricky concepts. If for some reason you cannot or do not want to make up the test, try not to stress out if your scores were only marginally worse than the last time you took the SAT. All students should keep an eye on the FAQ on the College Board web site for the June 6th test in case there are updates. Also, if you have questions or complaints and want a response from the College Board, call their customer service line at 866-756-7346. They are asking people to email them customer service problems, but this is because it makes it easier for them to issue stock responses. Finally, if you feel cheated by the College Board’s mistake, don’t forget about the pending lawsuit against them. If the College Board loses, you may be due some compensation. How did you do?
